I am an old school geek and not the flavor of Geek of most of my friends. I 'grok' geekiness in a different way.

D & D is something I played in high school in the late seventies and early 80s.

I would spend all night reading Zelazny, Asimov, Donaldson and Moorcock passing my parents in the morning as I went to bed and they went to work.

I remember when I saw Star Wars for the first time how empty the theater was. It was me, my friends and the 4 or 5 other geeks that saw every Sci Fi movie that came out.
And I remember 2 weeks later we had to wait 2 and half hours to see it again because everyone else had figured out how F'n cool it was. (And we didn't need to refer to it as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope because there wasn't any other Star Wars.)

And I remember in the seventies one of my most special geeky memories of all and that is sitting down with my Dad to watch reruns of Star Trek.

The sense of joy, comfort, wonder and excitement that Star Trek provides me can not be expressed in words.

It is a primal memory of child hood that I cherish with the same fondness and relish that my oldest and most prized, copy of Lord of the Rings musters in me as I read it for the 20th time.

It is a direct primal link to being a kid again and all the wonder and joy that entails when you can just be. When the days were longer the sky bluer and the grass greener.

And I can't wait for the opportunity for it to come again. Because it is just on the horizon and I can't wait to boldly go where I have been before.

Star Trek the J.J. Abrams version is just around the corner to its release and I have the anticipatory excitement of a child at his birthday party waiting to unwrap the biggest gift.

The reviews all rave about it, but I am still afraid to get my hopes up to high.

I am hoping this latest offering of the Star Trek franchise will turn on a younger generation of Geeks and they too may join the ranks of Trekkers everywhere.

Come on in, the Romulan Ale is fine, or I hope it will be.

Count down begins and I can't wait!! :)

I have never been a big fan of the 9 noble virtues.

I think it is self-limiting by its very nature and the lore is full of so much more.

I like what the Northvegr site lists as heathen values or more precisely things that deserve praise.

I like this list and I haven't gone through it point for point to see where each of these are in the lore but I would like to. Northvegr itself gives an article on this subject and since I don't want to reinvent the wheel I am going to start with that.

What is praiseworthy?

1. Gifting is praiseworthy.
2. Generosity is praiseworthy.
3. Moderation is praiseworthy.
4. The maintaining of frith in all circumstances is praiseworthy.
5. Courage is praiseworthy.
6. The seeking of good over ill is praiseworthy.
7. Hospitality is praiseworthy.
8. Courtesy is praiseworthy.
9. Tolerance is praiseworthy.
10. The pursuit of wisdom and knowledge is praiseworthy.
11. The defense of freedom is praiseworthy.
12. Industriousness is praiseworthy.
13. Vigilance is praiseworthy.
14. The protection, nurturing and forbearing of kin is praiseworthy.
15. Showing respect for elders is praiseworthy.
16. Loyalty to friends and kin is praiseworthy.
17. Keeping an oath is praiseworthy.
18. Honoring the sanctity of marriage is praiseworthy.
19. Refraining from mockery is praiseworthy.
2o. Refraining from arrogance is praiseworthy.
21. Making kin, honor and justice more important than gold is praiseworthy.
22. Cleanliness is praiseworthy.
23. The maintaining of one's dignity in all situations is praiseworthy.
24. Good organization is praiseworthy.
25. Persistence is praiseworthy.
26. The rule of law is praiseworthy.
27. To try ones steel against an opponent fairly is praiseworthy.
28. Respect for the dead is praiseworthy.
29. For a man to never strike a woman is praiseworthy.
30. To not abuse one's power is praiseworthy.

I would be interested for support or contradiction in the lore on any of these points, please feel free to educate me.

ECT [Aug. 25th, 2008|09:30 am]
I had a really good time at ECT and I agree with the other people that have commented so far that it was a recharging experience.

The highlights for me:
Seeing lots of people you don't see often and sharing mead, laughing and having a good time.

Spending all day Saturday with my son. I was tired after drinking all night getting an hour and half of sleep and then having to get up at 7:00 AM to drive all the way home to get him and all the way back to camp but it was soooo worth it.

We plopped down at Snakes and Scales right at start time where he and all the kids had a blast with the animals and the day went fantastically from there.

I love what was done with Pillage the Village (even though I am sure its current incarnation is an insurance risk).

And the best thing introduced for me this year was the bouncy thing for the kids.

Sure the kids loved it, but it was really a boon to all the parents.

Kids bounce around and have a blast in a contained space and parents sit in shade and talk.

Brilliant!

My only regret is all the people I didn't get to spend more time with.

Anyway back to work and the grind but I still have all the good memories to keep me bouyant through the day.

* Post 3 things you've done that you believe nobody else on your F-list has done.
* If anybody responds with "I've done that," add another thing.
* Encourage your friends to paste this into their own journal to list the unique things they've done

1. I have had sex on top of a megalithic structure in England (no it wasn't Stonehenge)
2. When I was 23 years old I saw Joan Jett and I was literally touching the stage at a general admission show and in between songs she commented on how cute I was po-going around in front of her. She than made eye contact with me for the whole next song, didn't move from in front of me and serenaded me with "I wanna be your dog".
That was so hot, serenaded by Joan Jett.
3. I met Jack Nicholson on the ski slopes of Aspen and he gave me the most wicked grin like something from "The Shining" before skiing off. (I actually met a bunch of celebrities in Aspen, but that was the most memorable.)

IM Trojan Virus - This is a real issue, trust me I know personally!! [Jan. 30th, 2008|03:54 pm]
 All,

There is a virus spreading through IM.

Symptoms: Virus will effect you internet connectivity (blasts your ports by downloading your address book and propegating itself to all your friends, commaderes the home path of your browser).

Basically your network functionality will go in the toilet but there are major security concerns as well.

Take the following steps:
Do not open any files in IM.
Look out for the following files on your computer using the Search feature:
WKSSVC.EXE-2189A0D1.pf
QHOST.ADP
SPOOL.EXE

Now there are valid files on your system labeled WKSSVC but they have a dll and dl_ extension and are not executables (having .exe extension, the one with exe is invalid). They is also a valid spool file as well for the printer these are not the files I mentioned above.

Most of the applications this virus installs on your system are not visible to anti-virus software and anti spyware and addware software. (QHOST probably will be detected and cleaned but you are not out of woods, trust me>)

They are launched from Prefetch and are safely tucked away before the anti-virus and spyware applications run.

They have to be edited in your registry - DO NOT do  this yourself unless you really know what you are doing - computer go boom bye bye if you screw up registry.

As a preventitive right now delete all temporary network files and cookies on your computer

The problem is any cookies and temporary internet files on your system at the time you get the virus will be accessed by the people who wrote the virus. This means they will not only have the site you went to but depedning how things are cached your user name and password as well

This means all your passwords have to be changed if you don't delete your temporary internet files and cookies before you get the virus, any on your system when you get the virus are suspect.

Depending on your OS it is not enought to go to Internet Tools in your browser and delete these files that way.  (XP-SP2 and Vistas you can do it from just the Browser Internet Tools but older Microsoft MS this will not work.)

You should go do a serarch for files with temporary in the name and with cookies in name and then delete the contents inside these folders.

If you need any help with this please call

Nice to hear. [Jan. 10th, 2008|09:32 am]

I just hosted Vingolf's 10th Anniversary blot  at my house last Saturday.

It went really well.

So many people wrote me emails telling me what a positive experience it was.

It was really cool to get so much appreciative feedback.

I am glad what Vingolf does as a group seems to resonate with people.

You scored 52% Slytherin, 20% Ravenclaw, 36% Gryffindor, and 16% Hufflepuff!

Or perhaps in Slytherin

Tired and Overworked [Jun. 30th, 2007|12:07 pm]

I am soooo tired.  I have been working from home, working from work and everything in between.

I have worked the better part of the last two days and there is no end in sit.

I am on call 24-7 and at work for 12 hours a day.

Last night I had to spend 11:00 AM (right when I got to sleep), phone rang and I was working to 1:00 AM.

Sooooo tired.

Gotta go, another issue...

Two Important Reasons to Celebrate March 20th, [Mar. 8th, 2007|05:43 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |Dead Kennedy's Too Drunk to Fuck]

Not only is this March 20th my very awesome, light of my life son's birthday but it is the day I will have my employment terminated at my current job.

Yeah!

Just to start a new one on March 26th.

It is in my field, 12.5 miles from my house (I commute 108 miles a day now) and pays $16,000.00 more than I make now.

Fucking Awesome! I have regrets leaving this job and there is always some apprehension starting something new.

I will miss a lot of the people at my current job but after five years and a very challenging relationship with my immediate manager, it was more than past the time to move on.

I like to refer to my manager and his antics as the AC being on too high. This is a good code way of calling him an Ass Clown without him knowing it and with my co-workers getting a good laugh (thanks Larry for introducing me to that term).

I will be off March 21 - 23 and wouldn't mind celebrating a bit.

Let me know if anyone can make it say Friday March 23.

Later,
Jon

Happy New Year and this makes me 8 posts shy of a third page [Jan. 4th, 2007|05:53 pm]
[mood |accomplished]

I just checked all my live journal posts and it has been over three years now. My first post was on December 31, 2003.

This post now makes my grand total in three years, 32.

I still have 8 more posts to make before I even go on to a third page.

I think I will have a celebration the day I get to a third page.

I am posting to Live Journal more lately so it should only take about another year.

Yes one short year from now I will throw a party in celebration of the multitudinously, verbose diatribe that is my live journal account.

Peace out and I wish everyone a very Happy New Year which was the original point of this post before I went all anal boy with the stats.

May the year bring the laughter of your friends and kin to your hall, and may health, peace and happiness abound.

Jon
